Business profile

Updated

Extra Space Storage is a real estate investment trust, or REIT, focused on self-storage. It rents enclosed spaces to individuals and businesses that need somewhere to keep their belongings. Customers generally rent month to month and move their own goods in and out. Stores typically have on-site managers who oversee daily operations and help tenants.

The company owns some stores outright, holds partial interests in others and manages stores for outside owners. It also lends to self-storage owners whose properties it manages and reinsures policies covering tenants’ stored goods. Nearly all of its business is conducted through Extra Space Storage LP, its operating partnership.

Total pay is as the Summary Compensation Table states it; actually paid revalues the year’s share awards at its end, as the SEC’s pay-versus-performance rule asks. $100 invested is what $100 in the company’s shares at the start of the earliest year shown was worth at each year’s end. Ownership is the proxy’s own table: the directors and officers as a group, and every holder of 5% or more. Read the proxy statement
