IMC Rare Earths reports metallurgical testwork from the University of Brighton showing that, under laboratory conditions, acidified magnesium sulfate can recover up to 73% of total rare earth elements (excluding cerium) from Itarantim's ionic adsorption clay. Recovery of high-value terbium (71.4%) and dysprosium (70.5%) was demonstrated; ammonium sulfate was less effective. Leach solutions contained 4,000–8,000 mg/L total REs, and downstream processing produced a mixed RE carbonate with up to 86.6% RE recovery and a mixed oxide with about 41% RE. Uranium and thorium remained below detection limits. The results support exploring an in-situ recovery (ISR) development pathway, potentially reducing excavation, tailings, and capital needs, pending field tests, engineering studies, and permitting. Next steps include hydrogeological testing, field-scale ISR pilot testing, and continued optimization of recovery and processing. Strong ISR-positive lab results suggest a potentially lower-cost, lower-impact development pathway that could significantly alter Itarantim's economics if field validation succeeds.
