Latest quarter
Synchrony reported Q3 FY2026 adjusted earnings of $2.68 per share, above the consensus estimate of $2.48. Adjusted revenue was $4.8 billion, below the consensus on an unrounded basis, although both figures round to $4.8 billion; the reported surprise was −0.56%.
The company’s reported revenue was $5.9 billion, compared with $5.9 billion a year earlier. CFO Brian Wenzel said net interest income rose 2% to $4.8 billion, helped by higher interest and fees and lower interest expense. Ending loan receivables rose 3% to $103 billion as purchase volume more than offset elevated payment rates.
Diluted earnings per share fell to $2.68 from $2.86 a year earlier. Wenzel said the provision for credit losses rose to $1.3 billion, reflecting a reserve build compared with a release a year earlier. Other expense rose 10% to $1.4 billion, driven by operational losses, technology investment and marketing. Synchrony’s operating margin was 20.0%, compared with 24.4% a year earlier, while free cash flow was $2.5 billion, down from $2.6 billion.

What management said on the call
CEO Brian Doubles said purchase volume grew 8% from a year earlier, with growth across all five sales platforms. Diversified value spending rose 13%, which he attributed primarily to partner expansion and higher gas prices; home and auto volume rose 9%, helped by new programs, selected furniture retailers and gas prices. Co-branded card spending increased 23%, supported by new programs and product upgrades.
Asked about consumer behavior, Doubles said higher gas prices, inflation and low consumer confidence were not materially changing spending. He pointed to the labor market and wage growth as offsets, adding: “Consumers continue to spend through it.” He said Synchrony had opened up credit earlier in the year and expected that to contribute to growth next year.
CFO Brian Wenzel said a lower loan receivable yield and lower liquidity portfolio yield reduced net interest margin from a year earlier, partly offset by lower funding costs. Sequentially, margin increased by 42 basis points, which he attributed mainly to fewer earned-income reversals and a higher mix of loan receivables. The net charge-off rate fell to 4.79% from 5.16% a year earlier.
On investment, Doubles said CareCredit PayLater gives eligible health and wellness customers an installment option alongside the existing card. He also described a Stripe integration intended to make CareCredit financing available in online checkout. Wenzel said higher operational losses, technology investment and marketing contributed to the increase in other expense; he expects fourth-quarter other expense dollars to be generally in line with the third quarter.
Asked about competition and acquisitions, Doubles said competition for merchant and provider programs had been consistent and that terms and pricing remained rational. He said Synchrony had renewed and won programs and preferred relatively small acquisitions it could grow using its scale. Asked about the digital platform, he noted that a prior-year upgrade of the PayPal portfolio to co-branded cards affected the year-over-year comparison.
Guidance
For full-year 2026, Synchrony now expects approximately $9.50 in diluted earnings per share, compared with its earlier range of estimates. CFO Brian Wenzel said the new expectation is at the high end of that original range and reflects the business’s performance during the year.
