American Tower Corporation is a real estate investment trust that owns, operates and develops shared communications real estate. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Boston, it leases space on towers and other communications sites to wireless carriers, broadcasters, wireless-data providers, government agencies, municipalities and other tenants.
A tenant installs and maintains its own radios, antennas and related equipment at an American Tower site. The company also operates distributed antenna system networks for wireless coverage in buildings and outdoor areas, manages rooftop and tower sites for property owners, and leases certain fiber, land and power-related infrastructure. Its U.S. data centers provide space, power, cooling and network connectivity for enterprises, network operators, cloud providers and supporting service providers; facilities at network-convergence points can serve as interconnection hubs.
