UMB Financial Corporation (UMBF) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

UMB reported revenue of $1.1 billion for Q3 FY2026, up 4.21% from a year earlier. On the consensus basis, revenue net of interest expense was $781.1 million, above the $749.9 million estimate; adjusted earnings per share of $3.56 also exceeded the $3.22 consensus.

The company’s filing attributed higher net interest income primarily to growth in average loans and securities and deposit repricing as short-term rates fell. It said those gains were partly offset by lower balances due from banks and less purchase-accounting accretion. Noninterest income also rose, with the filing citing growth in fund services, corporate trust and trust services revenue.

UMB said noninterest expense fell year over year, including lower acquisition-related costs. Its filing also showed a higher provision for credit losses. Operating margin was 30.3%, compared with 21.9% a year earlier, while free cash flow rose to $358.9 million from $257.8 million.

What management said on the call

CEO J. Mariner Kemper said loan production and average loan balances grew during the quarter, while fund services and corporate trust contributed to fee-income growth. CFO Ram Shankar said commercial and industrial lending drove the increase in average loans, with activity across several markets. He added that loan payoffs are difficult to predict and affect net growth.

Shankar said purchase-accounting adjustments contributed $33.1 million to quarterly net interest income. He attributed the sequential rise in core net interest margin to asset repricing, higher reinvestment rates and changes in the mix of earning assets, partly offset by deposit costs and seasonal movements in demand deposits. He said indexed deposits reprice immediately after Federal Reserve action, while loan yields reset later under their contracts.

Asked whether loan growth could outpace deposits and force UMB to change its approach, Kemper pointed to seasonal deposit movements and said he expected deposits to grow in the fourth quarter. He said UMB intends to fund its business with deposits over time. Shankar added that the company was running deposit campaigns.

Kemper said the agreed Eldorado Savings Bank acquisition would add 35 branches and extend UMB’s presence in California and Nevada. He described the transaction as consistent with a strategy of supplementing organic growth with acquisitions that meet the bank’s criteria. Asked about plans for the new markets, he said UMB would initially preserve Eldorado’s existing franchise and could subsequently extend its commercial banking services into the Sacramento area.

On investment, Shankar said UMB had selected an AI tool for employees’ workflows and was prioritizing uses intended to improve processes and productivity. He said technology project costs and incentive compensation accruals would contribute to fourth-quarter operating expenses.

Guidance

Shankar expects fourth-quarter core net interest margin to remain relatively flat and operating expenses to be between $404.0 million and $405.0 million. He expects a tax rate of 21.0% to 22.0%. Kemper expects fourth-quarter gross loan production to moderate toward first-half levels and deposits to grow. UMB expects the Eldorado transaction to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.
