Latest quarter

MSC Industrial reported fourth-quarter revenue of $1.1 billion, up 10.3% from $978.2 million a year earlier. Revenue exceeded the consensus by 0.43%, although both the reported and estimated amounts round to $1.1 billion. Adjusted earnings per share of $1.45 also exceeded the consensus of $1.39.

CFO Rob Kuhns said pricing was the main contributor to average daily sales growth, while volume also increased. He reported growth in national accounts and sales through vending and in-plant programs, but said public-sector daily sales declined against a tougher prior-year comparison.

MSC’s gross margin rose to 40.6% from 40.4%, while reported operating margin fell to 6.75% from 8.62%. Kuhns said a noncash impairment of the Digital Core project reduced reported operating margin and earnings. Diluted earnings per share fell to $0.85 from $1.01, while free cash flow increased to $63.8 million from $58.5 million.

What management said on the call

CEO Martina McIsaac said MSC saw evidence of an industrial recovery across its manufacturing end markets. CFO Rob Kuhns said fourth-quarter average daily sales growth came primarily from pricing, with volume also contributing. Ryan Mills, vice president of investor relations and business development, said higher sales per vending machine reflected improving demand and production activity.

McIsaac said MSC has changed its field sales structure and nearly doubled daily in-person customer contacts with fewer sellers. Asked about customers affected by the restructuring, she said the group that experienced coverage gaps or substantial changes had returned to growth, although it continued to grow more slowly than customers who saw little change.

On margins, Kuhns said targeted decisions to win volume and the time needed to pass material inflation through to contract prices were pressuring gross margin. He said those sales still added to operating profit because MSC could spread fixed costs over higher revenue. Asked about the company’s incremental margin framework, Kuhns said contract negotiations and the margins on new business were among the variables affecting it. McIsaac said MSC had raised prices but was facing another wave of tungsten and metalworking inflation.

McIsaac said MSC was discontinuing its Digital Core modernization program after a technology review and moving to a modular, AI-first approach. She said the company was already using AI for selling and inventory management and was exploring order automation and product recommendations. She said MSC had not shared the implications of each change individually.

For the quarter ahead, Kuhns said material inflation and pricing timing would weigh on gross margin, while employee costs and freight would contribute to a sequential increase in adjusted operating expenses. He said productivity gains and lower variable expenses would partly offset those costs.

Guidance

CFO Rob Kuhns said MSC does not give full-year guidance and described its incremental operating margin framework, pointing to inflation, contract price negotiations and new business as factors affecting the year.
