Gen Digital Inc. (GEN) Business Profile

Updated · Covers results through FY2026 · How this is made

What it does

Gen Digital sells software and services that help people protect their devices, personal information, identities and finances. Its brands include Norton, Avast, LifeLock and MoneyLion. It serves consumers, families and small businesses through subscriptions, free products and partner channels.

The Cyber Safety Platform segment provides security, device performance and online privacy products. Customers can buy a membership that combines several protections or select individual products. These include software that detects malware and scams, as well as virtual private networks, or VPNs, that encrypt connections when people use the internet.

The Trust-Based Solutions segment includes identity monitoring and restoration, digital reputation services and financial wellness products. LifeLock monitors for potential misuse of personal information and helps customers recover from identity theft. MoneyLion offers personal finance products and tools, while the Engine marketplace connects consumers with offers from third-party financial providers.

Gen is also incorporating protection for people using artificial intelligence into its products. Its Agent Trust Hub screens agent skills and monitors agents, and the latest Norton 360 release brings that capability into Safe AI.

The company was founded in 1982 and has headquarters in Tempe, Arizona, and Prague, Czech Republic. Vincent Pilette is its chief executive.

How it makes money

Gen earns revenue from paid subscriptions and from financial transactions and product usage across its own properties, marketplaces and partner channels. It also offers free products, particularly through freemium brands such as Avast. Free users can add paid features or upgrade to a suite of security, identity and privacy services.

Most subscriptions are offered on annual terms, although monthly subscriptions are also available. Direct subscriptions are primarily sold through Gen’s e-commerce platform and mobile apps, and the company has a direct billing relationship with most of those customers. Subscription revenue is generally recognized over time, rather than entirely when a customer places an order.

Cyber Safety Platform sells comprehensive memberships, including Norton 360 and Avast One, alongside individual security, performance and privacy products. Membership tiers differ in the features included; higher tiers can include online privacy and identity restoration services. Gen also sells add-on products to existing users.

Trust-Based Solutions sells identity protection and restoration services and offers MoneyLion financial products. Engine distributes both Gen’s own products and third-party offers through marketplaces and partner platforms. Partner revenue includes revenue from products sold through the financial marketplace and from product usage, as well as revenue sourced through channels such as retailers, employers and telecom providers.

In Q2 fiscal 2027, revenue was $1.37 billion. Direct revenue was $1.074 billion, while partner revenue was $295 million. Gen reported that Cyber Safety revenue grew 5% and Trust-Based Solutions revenue grew 26% in the quarter.

Customers and how it sells

Gen serves individual consumers and families as well as small offices, home offices and very small businesses. Its paid-customer measure includes active subscribers and users who have generated revenue through qualifying financial transactions or product usage; it excludes free-trial users and those who have not transacted in the relevant period.

Gen ended Q2 fiscal 2027 with 83 million paid customers, up from 81 million in the preceding quarter. Across its brands and services, it reached 500 million users and endpoints and connected nearly 120 million financial accounts. These figures describe different measures of reach, not just paying subscribers.

Customers find Gen through its websites and apps, free products and partners. Partner channels include retailers, telecom providers, employers and financial marketplaces. Free products are used to reach consumers globally, especially in international markets, and offer users the option to upgrade.

Gen’s products and services reach users in more than 150 countries. Identity protection is offered in the United States primarily through LifeLock, while international identity services operate under Norton, Avast and other brands. MoneyLion’s personal finance products and tools are offered in the United States. Gen’s share of revenue from the Americas increased in fiscal 2026, primarily because of its MoneyLion acquisition.

Suppliers and costs

Gen uses third-party software in its business, including open-source software, and relies on the relevant third parties to protect licensed rights. It also works with distribution partners and third-party financial product providers. Physical retail accounts for a small portion of distribution, which Gen says minimizes the impact of supply-chain disruptions.

Its costs include partner revenue sharing, payment processing, marketing, employee compensation, research and development, and amortization of acquired intangible assets. Gen uses advertising to attract customers and promote its brands, while its engineering and product teams develop and enhance its offerings.

In fiscal 2026, cost of revenue increased $301 million, primarily reflecting increases in partner revenue share, payment processing fees and intangible-asset amortization. Sales and marketing expense increased $483 million, including a $205 million loss on the sale of Instacash Advances and higher marketing expenses. Research and development expense increased $80 million, with higher headcount costs among the contributors.

Gen employed approximately 3,900 people as of April 3, 2026, across more than 20 countries.

Competitive position

Gen competes with providers that focus on individual products as well as platforms with broader ecosystems. In security, its principal competitors include Apple, Google, Microsoft, Bitdefender and McAfee. In online privacy, they include Apple, DuckDuckGo, Mozilla, Nord Security and Proton.

For identity protection and reputation, competitors include credit bureaus Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, as well as Aura, Microsoft and Intuit’s Credit Karma. In financial wellness, Gen names Chime, Dave, LendingTree, NerdWallet, Robinhood and SoFi among its competitors. Some rivals have greater financial, technical, marketing or distribution resources, and can offer products at lower prices or for free.

Gen’s competitive resources include its established brands, customer relationships, partner distribution and technology. Its free products bring users into the ecosystem, while membership suites and add-ons give them ways to purchase more services. The company also uses customer-permissioned data to personalize recommendations and improve protection.

Our reading: Gen’s brands and distribution provide a meaningful route to customers, but they do not prevent competition from larger platforms with their own reach. Our reading: Its combination of security, identity and financial data could support useful cross-selling, although the advantage depends on customer permission and the quality of its recommendations. Our reading: Memberships can support retention, but free alternatives and competing services limit how securely those relationships are protected.

Apple Security and online privacy High
Google Consumer security High
Microsoft Security and identity protection High
McAfee Consumer security Medium

Growth opportunities

Gen’s growth strategy combines deeper sales to existing customers with expansion through partners and new products. In Cyber Safety, it is promoting broader memberships and additional services to people who already use its brands. In financial wellness, it is connecting identity protection with MoneyLion products and third-party offers on Engine.

The company is investing in a shared data and AI platform across its brands and partners. It is redesigning Norton 360 with VPN, scam protection and Safe AI features, and developing LifeLock experiences that connect breach alerts with on-demand assistance. Engine has also launched an insurance shopping experience built for AI agents.

Distribution is another focus. Gen is expanding through telecom providers, employers and marketplace partners, while Norton Money Workplace brings financial wellness into an employee-benefits channel already used by Norton and LifeLock. Engine added 18 new partners in Q2 fiscal 2027.

The company reported that Q2 fiscal 2027 revenue grew 12%, with Cyber Safety growth led by memberships, upsells and upgrades and Trust-Based Solutions growth driven by financial wellness adoption and Engine. Gen expects fiscal 2027 revenue of $5.465 billion to $5.515 billion. It does not expect agentic capabilities to contribute materially to revenue in that fiscal year.

Structural risks

  • Product development and changing threats: Gen must continually improve its products as customer preferences, operating systems, hardware and technology change. New offerings require time and resources, and integration with acquired products and third-party technology can be challenging.
  • Retention and pricing: Customer retention can fluctuate with satisfaction, perceived value, service quality and competitors’ prices, including the availability of free alternatives. Changes to auto-renewal and consumer-protection rules can also affect renewals.
  • Acquisitions and integration: Acquisitions can involve difficulty realizing expected benefits, integrating technology and operations, retaining customers and third-party relationships, and managing added debt or unexpected costs. MoneyLion is among Gen’s acquired businesses.
  • Privacy and financial regulation: Gen processes personal information subject to privacy and data-security laws in multiple jurisdictions. Its financial products and platforms also face regulation covering matters such as consumer protection, lending, electronic payments and credit reporting.
  • International operations: Currency movements, inflation, overlapping tax regimes, trade restrictions and varying data-protection requirements can increase costs or constrain operations. Coordinating staff and activities across countries also presents challenges.
  • Competition and intellectual property: Some competitors have more resources and may introduce products or respond to customer needs faster. Impairment of Gen’s intellectual property rights, or claims that its products infringe others’ rights, could harm its business.

Bottom line

Our reading

Gen combines a recurring consumer-security subscription business with identity services, financial products and a marketplace. Its established brands and distribution give it several ways to reach customers, while its financial offerings give it more services to sell to those users (item1; item7). The opportunity to deepen those relationships comes with exposure to retention, competition, integration and regulation; newer AI-agent products remain an investment rather than a material expected revenue contributor this fiscal year (item1a; call_prepared).
