W.R. Berkley Corporation (WRB) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

W.R. Berkley reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $3.7 billion, down from $3.8 billion a year earlier. Revenue missed the consensus, while adjusted earnings per share of $1.17 exceeded the $1.14 consensus estimate. The company reported diluted earnings per share of $1.14, compared with $1.28 a year earlier.

The filing shows net income declined as higher investment losses, mainly from a change in unrealized gains on equity securities, outweighed increases in investment and underwriting income. Gross premiums written rose as growth in Insurance more than offset a decline in Reinsurance & Monoline Excess, where casualty and property writings fell.

CFO Rich Baio said the reinsurance decline reflected a competitive market and the company’s underwriting discipline. W.R. Berkley’s operating margin fell to 16.2% from 18.0% a year earlier, while gross margin declined to 46.5% from 47.8%.

What management said on the call

CEO Rob Berkley said renewal rates excluding workers’ compensation rose in the quarter and retention remained steady. He said the company was deliberately shifting other liability business toward smaller accounts, where it likes the margins and has the capacity to handle business efficiently. In response to a question about that shift, Berkley said larger accounts attract more competition and that technology investments help the company turn around quotes for smaller customers.

Berkley said commercial property business had declined, while private-client and accident-and-health business continued to grow. In commercial auto, he said exposure was falling but the rate increases the company was taking were a multiple of that decline. He also pointed to incremental firming in California workers’ compensation, with the rest of the country lagging.

CFO Rich Baio said reinsurance premiums fell as the company maintained underwriting discipline in a competitive market. Berkley said he was dissatisfied with conditions in casualty and property reinsurance. Asked about the property renewal market, he said there was limited visibility and that the company buys more reinsurance than it sells.

On investments, Baio said a larger asset base and higher domestic yields helped lift fixed-maturity income. Berkley said the company intends to extend portfolio duration to capture yields. Baio also said investment-fund income can vary from quarter to quarter.

Berkley said technology tools are speeding up underwriting intake and claims handling, with further insights for decision-making still ahead. He said the company is also considering how autonomous vehicles and robotics could change the risks it insures.

Guidance

CFO Rich Baio said W.R. Berkley expects investment-fund income to vary by quarter. CEO Rob Berkley said the company expects property conditions to become more challenging and intends to extend investment portfolio duration.
