Wabtec (WAB) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

Wabtec reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $3.1 billion, below the $3.2 billion consensus, while adjusted earnings per share of $2.83 exceeded the $2.72 consensus. Revenue rose from $2.9 billion a year earlier, and diluted EPS increased to $2.42 from $1.81.

The filing attributed Freight sales growth to higher locomotive modernization deliveries, core services, industrial demand and mining sales, partly offset by fewer locomotive deliveries. Transit sales benefited from demand for equipment and aftermarket services, while acquisitions contributed to growth in both segments.

Wabtec’s gross margin rose to 37.3% from 34.7%, and its operating margin increased to 20.0% from 17.0%. The filing attributed the gross margin improvement to productivity, favorable business mix, restructuring savings and acquisitions, partly offset by commodity costs and net tariffs. Wabtec reported free cash flow of $381.0 million, up from $312.0 million a year earlier.

What management said on the call

CEO Rafael Santana said international infrastructure investment was supporting Wabtec’s order pipeline. During the quarter, he said, the company secured locomotive and service orders internationally, including awards in Africa and Brazil, as well as North American locomotive and modernization orders from two railroad customers. He also pointed to transit demand supported by fleet expansion and renewal programs.

Asked about backlog, Santana said the company was extending order coverage across its products to match their lead times. He said opportunities remained across regions, although North American customer decisions were specific to each customer and he had not seen a change in buying behavior associated with recent carload growth.

CFO John Olin said some locomotive deliveries shifted from the third quarter to the fourth because of scheduling or customer acceptance, rather than operational problems. He said the units had shipped and he expected no full-year impact. Olin also said Transit sales benefited from an acquisition and growth across products and services; the filing attributed some Transit growth to contract price escalations.

On margins, Olin said favorable product mix and productivity from integration and efficiency initiatives helped the quarter exceed his expectations. Asked to separate the drivers, he said “we haven’t quantified the differences” between everyday improvement, integration and portfolio optimization. He said investment in engineering supports customer fuel efficiency, productivity, capacity use and safety.

For the fourth quarter, Olin expects greater margin expansion than in the third, partly because the year-over-year tariff headwind should ease. He cautioned that “Those tariffs do not go away.” Asked about competition, Santana described international markets as competitive and said Wabtec continues to invest in its products and technology. On a question about longer-term margins, Olin expected growth in FY2027 but said it was too early to specify its magnitude.

Guidance

Wabtec raised its FY2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $10.85–$11.05 from its previous range of $10.60–$10.90. CEO Rafael Santana said the revision reflected the third-quarter results and ongoing demand across the business. In its results release, Wabtec said it had raised and tightened the range.
