Latest quarter
Travelers reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $12.4 billion, beating the consensus by 0.41%, although both reported revenue and the estimate round to $12.4 billion. Adjusted earnings per share were $9.18, above the consensus estimate of $7.07.
Revenue was down from $12.5 billion a year earlier, while diluted earnings per share rose to $9.04 from $8.24. The filing attributes the faster growth in per-share earnings than in net income to recent share repurchases. It says higher favorable development of prior-year reserves and investment income lifted pretax income, partly offset by higher catastrophe losses and realized investment losses.
Travelers’ filing says earned premiums grew in Business Insurance and Bond & Specialty Insurance but fell in Personal Insurance. The prior-year quarter also included premiums from Canadian operations that Travelers subsequently divested. Gross margin rose to 47.7% from 47.1%, and operating margin increased to 20.0% from 19.7%. Free cash flow was $3.9 billion, compared with $4.2 billion a year earlier.

What management said on the call
CEO Alan Schnitzer said Business Insurance grew in every line except property, with renewal premiums rising and customer retention higher or stable across its lines. He said Bond & Specialty Insurance also grew, while Personal Insurance retained customers in auto and homeowners and wrote more new homeowners business.
Asked about pricing, Schnitzer described the overall environment as stable. He said sequential changes in property and liability renewal pricing were modest, while cautioning that Travelers was not prepared to call a bottom in property pricing. He said the company decides which accounts to accept and at what price individually.
Personal Insurance President Michael Klein said Travelers adjusts prices as it monitors performance and loss costs, including auto rate decreases during the quarter. He said the business is also investing in products, services and distribution to pursue profitable growth over time.
Schnitzer said liability-loss conditions were generally consistent with expectations, but that drivers of legal-system abuse continued to pressure losses. He described a digital claims tool for unrepresented claimants and said Travelers uses AI to help claims professionals review files and respond to demands. In the Q&A, he said Travelers was generating operating leverage through lower software-development, first-notice-of-loss and policy-servicing costs, though the effect of some improved underwriting insights was harder to isolate.
CFO Dan Frey said fixed-income investments drove the increase in after-tax investment income through higher invested assets and average yields. He said the portfolio’s unrealized loss was driven by interest rates rather than credit quality and that Travelers generally holds fixed-income investments to maturity.
Asked about the outlook for revenue, Schnitzer said Travelers felt optimistic about execution but would not indicate a trend or provide a number. Frey likewise declined to provide segment revenue guidance.
Guidance
Frey said Travelers now expects its full-year 2026 expense ratio to be a little below 29.0%, and about the same in 2027. He attributed the increase in its expected ratio to variable expenses, including profit sharing and contingent commissions, coming in above plan.
Frey also said the company raised its fourth-quarter outlook for after-tax fixed-income net investment income, including short-term securities, slightly from its prior forecast.
