Latest quarter
Talen Energy reported third-quarter revenue of $1.3 billion, up from $812.0 million a year earlier. Its adjusted earnings of $5.65 per share missed the consensus estimate of $8.26 per share.
The company’s filing attributed higher energy revenue, net of fuel and power purchases, partly to generation from acquired plants and to higher realized prices and volumes at Susquehanna and its other dispatchable fossil plants. Talen also reported higher capacity revenue, helped by higher cleared prices and the acquisitions, partly offset by lower cleared volumes.
The filing said higher forward power prices reduced the fair value of certain derivative contracts, while acquisitions contributed to higher operating costs, depreciation and interest expense. Operating margin fell to 19.2% from 32.4% a year earlier. Talen reported free cash flow of $238.0 million, compared with $424.0 million a year earlier; on the call, CFO Cole Muller reported adjusted free cash flow of $433 million.

What management said on the call
CEO Mac McFarland said demand is growing while new generation is difficult and costly to build. He expects volatility in power markets and said Talen’s commercial team is managing location-specific pricing and congestion as it hedges the portfolio.
CFO Cole Muller said the quarter’s adjusted cash generation benefited from acquired plants, higher settled power prices, greater generation volumes and increased cleared capacity revenue. He said realized hedge results partly offset those gains, while acquisition financing raised cash interest payments.
On customer contracts, McFarland said Talen is discussing structures ranging from long-term power agreements to powered-land development. He said the company is continuing those discussions while PJM considers changes involving large-load connections, reliability and capacity markets. McFarland also said the financial outlook does not assume additional large-load transactions.
Asked about customer requirements, President Terry Nutt said a timely grid connection is a priority for hyperscalers and developers, but cost also matters. McFarland said Talen is focused on grid-connected solutions that could combine existing generation with new capacity or demand response. He advocated a PJM demand-response product for large loads, under which customers could be paid to curtail consumption.
Muller said Talen expanded its share repurchase authorization to $3 billion through December 2028, including a $1.5 billion accelerated repurchase supported by a transaction that brings forward contracted capacity cash flows. He said the company expects to complete the accelerated program by the end of the first quarter of 2027 and targets returning approximately 70% of adjusted free cash flow to shareholders.
Guidance
Talen introduced 2027 guidance with midpoints of $2.675 billion for adjusted EBITDA and $1.625 billion for adjusted free cash flow. Muller said the guidance reflects the larger portfolio and September 30th forward curves, with approximately 70% of expected 2027 generation hedged.
Holding the post-repurchase share count constant, Talen raised its 2028 adjusted free cash flow outlook to a midpoint of $48 per share, approximately 20% higher than its prior outlook. The company introduced a 2029 range of $46 to $50 per share on the same basis. Including its capital allocation assumptions, Talen expects $53 per share in 2028 and $56 to $60 per share in 2029.
