What management said on the call

On the latest Q3 FY2026 call, President and Chief Executive Officer Kim Kalderman said demand from large pharmaceutical customers remained strong, U.S. academic demand had stabilized, and China recorded its fourth consecutive quarter of positive organic growth. She said emerging-biotech spending remained soft despite improved funding activity, contributing to a 2% organic revenue decline in Q3.

Kalderman said timing from two cell-therapy customers and a large OEM commercial-supply order created a 400-basis-point revenue headwind in Q3; excluding those items, she said underlying organic revenue growth was 2%. She said the Protein Sciences business faced unfavorable product mix and pricing pressure, while Diagnostics and Spatial Biology delivered 3% organic growth, including mid-teens spatial-biology growth. Kalderman said the COMET platform grew more than 65% and exited the quarter with a record backlog.

Chief Financial Officer Jim Hippel said Q3 adjusted gross margin declined year over year because of unfavorable product mix, while adjusted operating margin was 34.2%. He said the company continued to invest in growth platforms while pursuing structural streamlining and expense discipline.

Analysts pressed management on why emerging-biotech revenue declined high single digits despite improving funding. Kalderman said funding had shifted toward later-stage programs, while early-stage discovery funding fell to 18% from 25%, affecting the company’s core assay portfolio. Hippel said spending by biotech customers typically follows funding by two to three quarters and identified that timing as the principal variable for growth.

Hippel said Bio-Techne would not provide even soft FY2027 guidance until the next quarter. Kalderman said customer interest and sales funnels had improved in proteomic analysis and spatial biology, but the company had not yet seen that interest translate into sufficient orders to assume a recovery in biotech spending.

Guidance

On its Q3 FY2026 call, Bio-Techne expected Q4 organic growth to be approximately flat and expected low-single-digit underlying growth across the portfolio excluding cell-therapy headwinds. Hippel said the cell-therapy customer timing effect was expected to reduce Q4 growth by approximately 150 basis points year over year, and he said the company intended to close Q4 with approximately 100 basis points of margin expansion from the prior year. Hippel said the company would not provide even soft FY2027 guidance until the following quarter.
