How it makes money
Bio-Techne earns revenue chiefly by selling consumable reagents and assays, instruments, related services, and royalties. Consumables generated $985.1 million in FY2026, or 81.1% of revenue; these include products customers use repeatedly in laboratory and production workflows. Instruments generated $110.6 million, or 9.11%, while services generated $94.3 million, or 7.76%. Royalty revenue was $25.0 million, or 2.06%.
Protein Sciences is the larger segment, with $874.6 million of FY2026 revenue, or 72.2%. Reagent Solutions sells proteins, antibodies, small molecules, sera and cell-selection technologies. Analytical Solutions sells manual and automated protein-analysis instruments and immunoassays, including workflows for western blotting and multiplexed ELISA testing. Instruments can create an installed base, while cartridges, reagents and assays are replenished as customers conduct work.
Diagnostics and Spatial Biology produced $336.4 million, or 27.8%, of FY2026 revenue. Spatial Biology sells RNAscope assays, related reagents and COMET instruments. The diagnostics business sells controls, calibrators, diagnostic assays, genetic and oncology products, and custom reagents. Most of its diagnostic division’s sales are made under OEM agreements with instrument manufacturers; customer production schedules can make its revenue uneven.
FY2026 revenue was $1.2 billion; Q3 FY2026 revenue was $311.4 million. Management said on the call that COMET grew more than 65% in Q3 FY2026 and that GMP protein revenue grew nearly 50% year over year excluding two fast-track cell-therapy customers.

Suppliers and costs
Bio-Techne manufactures most of its products itself and uses electronic components, chemicals and biological materials. No supplier is material to the company overall. However, particular components can have a sole supplier or a limited pool of qualified suppliers because they require particular specifications, regulatory qualifications or other qualifications.
The company uses safety stock, alternative materials and multiple qualified sources in some cases to reduce supply disruption risk. Most products are shipped within one day of receiving an order; instruments and related cartridges are generally shipped within one to two weeks. There was no significant order backlog at the fiscal-year end.
Cost structure includes raw materials, manufacturing, research and development, selling and administrative expenses, intellectual-property protection, and compliance with diagnostic-device, laboratory, privacy, environmental, import-export and other regulations. Consolidated gross margin was 65.8% in FY2026. Management said on the call that Q3 adjusted gross margin was 70.4%, with the year-over-year change driven by product mix.

Competitive position
Bio-Techne operates in highly competitive markets across research reagents, protein analysis, diagnostics, spatial biology and cell-therapy workflows. The number and type of competitors varies by product line because no competitor necessarily supplies the same combination of products and services. Competition includes large global companies, smaller niche suppliers, entrants based in lower-cost manufacturing locations, and consolidated suppliers.
The company competes on price, quality and safety, performance, delivery speed, application expertise, service and support, technology and innovation, distribution reach, breadth of products, services and software, and brand recognition. It reports increased competition in a number of markets.
The excerpts do not name any company as a direct competitor, so no individual competitor is listed below. Thermo Fisher Scientific is named as a Protein Sciences distributor, not as a competitor.
Our reading: Bio-Techne’s product quality, application expertise and broad set of reagents, instruments and diagnostics support differentiation, but these strengths operate in markets where price, delivery, innovation and product breadth all matter. [item1]
Our reading: Its patent, trade-secret and trademark protections provide a moat around particular technologies and know-how, but the company states that pending applications may not result in patents and may not adequately cover competing offerings. [item1]
Our reading: Direct sales and third-party distribution across North America, Europe and Asia provide market access, though distributors do not prevent global and niche suppliers from competing in the same workflows. [item1]
Growth opportunities
Bio-Techne’s growth strategy combines internal product development, expansion into adjacent markets, geographic expansion and acquisitions or investments. It introduced over 1,900 new products in FY2026. The company is investing in research and development across major product lines and aims to use its research-market position to expand in diagnostics and other adjacent markets.
Cell and gene therapy is a growth area for Protein Sciences. The company owns 20% of Wilson Wolf and expects to acquire the remaining ownership by the end of calendar 2027, or earlier if specified milestones are achieved. Wilson Wolf supplies G-REX single-use bioreactors, and Bio-Techne markets complementary offerings with it. Management said on the call that GMP protein revenue grew nearly 50% year over year in Q3 FY2026 excluding two fast-track customers.
Spatial biology is another focus. Management said on the call that COMET grew more than 65% in Q3 FY2026, that the platform had a record backlog, and that the first COMET system was installed in China. It also reported high-single-digit growth for RNAscope in-situ hybridization products.
Management said on the call that emerging-biotech spending is a swing factor because customer spending typically trails funding by two to three quarters. It expects approximately flat organic growth in Q4 FY2026, assuming market conditions remain broadly consistent with Q3, and stated that stronger biotech spending could add to that outlook.
