Latest quarter
Sensata reported third-quarter revenue of $1.0 billion, above the consensus estimate of $972.0 million, and adjusted earnings per share of $1.13, above the $0.96 consensus. Revenue also came in above the company’s own guidance range for the quarter.
Revenue rose from $932.0 million a year earlier. Sensata’s filing said the quarter included $24.0 million from a canceled electric-vehicle program and that organic revenue grew 6.8%. The filing attributed Automotive’s organic growth primarily to the termination payment, partly offset by lower light-vehicle production. It attributed Industrials growth primarily to increased product content and Aerospace, Defense, and Commercial Equipment growth to commercial equipment and aerospace business and product mix.
Sensata reported gross margin of 33.1%, compared with 27.8% a year earlier, and operating margin of 17.5%, compared with −13.2%. The filing attributed the operating-income improvement partly to higher revenue, the absence of a prior-year goodwill impairment charge and restructuring savings. Free cash flow rose to $198.3 million from $136.3 million a year earlier.

What management said on the call
CEO Stephan von Schuckmann said the electric-vehicle termination payment helped the quarter, but underlying results met or exceeded guidance midpoints without it. CFO Andrew Lynch said revenue without the payment would have been $980 million, with organic growth of 4%. He added that Automotive’s operating margin before the payment was 25.2%, reflecting productivity and cost management.
Lynch said higher fuel prices and financing costs were affecting automotive demand, and that the fourth-quarter outlook reflected softer production and changing conditions in China. In response to a question about China, he said Sensata was gaining share or adding content in other regions and expected to continue outgrowing the automotive market. Von Schuckmann said Chinese manufacturers were gaining share while multinational manufacturers were losing local share, and that export growth also favored Chinese manufacturers.
Asked about cost pressure, von Schuckmann said supplies of boards and electronics were tight. He said Sensata first sought to design out costs and work with suppliers, then sought price adjustments from customers where costs could not be offset. Lynch said automotive pricing was a net headwind of roughly a percent and a half in the quarter, with productivity helping offset the effect.
Von Schuckmann said Sensata was extending existing products into markets including aerospace and data centers while developing products for new applications. He said its new liquid-cooling flow sensor was expected to begin shipping by mid-2027, subject to customer timing. He also said existing products and a broader commercial presence were driving data-center revenue, while design wins with hyperscalers were expected to begin ramping in mid-2027.
Lynch said the company ended the quarter with net leverage of 2.1 times trailing adjusted EBITDA after open-market debt repurchases. Looking beyond the quarter ahead, he said annual customer price reductions typically lower margins sequentially in the first quarter, with productivity benefits arriving after higher-cost inventory is sold.
