M&T Bank Corporation (MTB) Business Profile

Updated · Covers results through FY2025 · How this is made

What it does

M&T Bank Corporation is a bank holding company headquartered in Buffalo, New York. The corporation was incorporated in 1969. Its two wholly owned bank subsidiaries, M&T Bank and Wilmington Trust, N.A., offer banking, wealth management, trust and institutional services.

M&T Bank serves consumers, businesses, professional clients, government entities and financial institutions. It takes deposits and makes loans, including loans to consumers and small and medium-sized businesses in its banking markets. It also makes commercial mortgage loans secured by income-producing properties or properties used by borrowers in their businesses. Its subsidiaries provide equipment leasing and financing, multifamily real estate lending and loan servicing.

Wilmington Trust, N.A. and its subsidiaries offer institutional client and wealth management services. Trust and fiduciary services are also offered through M&T Bank and its subsidiary Wilmington Trust Company. M&T Securities provides institutional brokerage and securities services.

M&T Bank operates through banking offices and ATMs, principally in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States. It also has a commercial banking office in Ontario, Canada. At December 31, 2025, M&T had $213.5 billion in consolidated assets and $166.9 billion in deposits. M&T Bank and its subsidiaries represented over 99% of the company’s consolidated assets.

How it makes money

M&T earns interest on loans and investment securities. It pays interest on deposits and other borrowed funds, and the difference between interest earned and interest paid contributes to net interest income. Changes in market rates, the mix of assets and funding, and the rates paid on deposits can affect that income. The company also uses interest-rate swaps to manage how parts of its balance sheet reprice.

Taxable-equivalent net interest income was $6.99 billion in 2025 and $1.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026. The taxable-equivalent measure adjusts income on tax-exempt assets to make it comparable with income on fully taxable assets.

M&T organizes its business into Commercial Bank, Retail Bank, and Institutional Services and Wealth Management. Commercial banking includes business lending, equipment financing and commercial mortgages. Retail banking includes consumer lending, residential mortgages and deposit accounts. The institutional and wealth business provides trust and wealth management services.

The company also earns noninterest income from sources such as deposit service charges, mortgage banking, trust services, merchant and card activity, and fees related to credit and loan servicing. Some servicing arrangements generate fees over the life of the work: M&T Realty Capital services loans for purchasers of loans it originates, while the residential mortgage business sub-services loans whose contractual servicing rights are held by another party.

In the second quarter of 2026, mortgage banking revenues were $127 million and trust income was $197 million. The company expects higher sub-servicing fee income beginning in the third quarter of 2026. It also receives distributions from its Bayview investment, although their timing can vary.

Customers and how it sells

M&T serves individual consumers alongside businesses, professional clients, government entities and financial institutions. Its commercial lending includes loans to companies in industries such as financial services, insurance, services and wholesale. It also provides equipment leases and financing to commercial customers.

The branch and ATM network spans New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. At December 31, 2025, M&T Bank had 942 domestic banking offices, primarily in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions, and a full-service commercial banking office in Ontario, Canada.

Consumer lending generally focuses on people living near M&T Bank offices, while business lending generally focuses on small and medium-sized companies in those areas. The company also originates loans through offices in other states and in Ontario. Its core deposits come from consumer, corporate and institutional customers.

International activity is limited and includes trust-related services in Europe, foreign-currency transactions associated with customer activity, credit supporting domestic companies’ international activities and some loans to foreign borrowers. International activities account for less than 1% of consolidated assets and revenues. M&T also services residential mortgages for a partner: an arrangement with Bayview Financial began in February 2025.

Suppliers and costs

M&T’s principal source of funding is core deposits from consumer, corporate and institutional customers. It pays interest on some of those deposits and supplements them with funding such as brokered deposits, repurchase agreements, Federal Home Loan Bank advances and other borrowings. At December 31, 2025, core deposits totaled $153.3 billion.

The cost of funding depends in part on M&T’s ability to maintain or grow customer deposits. If deposits do not sufficiently meet its liquidity objectives, the company may have to pay more for funding. In the second quarter of 2026, it replaced higher-cost money market deposits with lower-cost time deposits, and the cost of interest-bearing deposits declined.

Operating expenses include salaries and benefits, outside data processing and software, and costs for risk management and other support services. Noninterest expense was $1.35 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Salaries and benefits were $826 million, while outside data processing and software costs increased as M&T continued investing in technology infrastructure and cybersecurity. M&T expects full-year 2026 expenses at the high end of the $5.5 billion-$5.6 billion range.

From revenue to operating income, FY2025
  1. Revenue$13.2B
  2. Cost of revenue−$3.5B
  3. Selling, general and administrative−$6.0B
  4. Other operating costs−$42.0M
  5. Operating income$3.7B

Competitive position

M&T competes for commercial and personal financial services and wealth business with other banks and thrifts, as well as credit unions, consumer lenders, leasing companies, securities brokers, investment advisers, insurers and other financial firms. Private credit funds also compete in financial services. M&T identifies no individual competitors among those it describes.

Diversified financial companies can offer combinations of services nationwide. Financial technology companies increasingly offer banking products or substitutes using digital and mobile technology, including stablecoins. Those firms can compete for customers outside M&T’s branch footprint. M&T says private credit has become less aggressive and that it is regaining regional market share; it does not quantify that share.

M&T has a physical network across its banking markets and relationships with consumer, business and institutional customers. It also offers lending, deposits, wealth services and trust services through its subsidiaries. Its core deposits are generated from customers across those groups.

Our reading: The local office network and customer relationships provide some competitive support, particularly for locally focused lending and deposit gathering, but the evidence does not establish how difficult those relationships are for customers to replace. Our reading: The range of banking and wealth services gives M&T opportunities to serve customers in several ways, though competitors can also combine services and reach customers nationwide.

Growth opportunities

M&T can expand through lending and deposits, fees from banking and wealth services, and acquisitions. It reviews opportunities to acquire banks, branches and other businesses that would complement its existing markets or geographic reach. It also originates commercial mortgages through M&T Realty Capital and provides equipment financing through subsidiaries.

In 2025, the company reduced its relative concentration in commercial real estate loans while average commercial and industrial, residential real estate and consumer loans grew. In the second quarter of 2026, average loans increased $3 billion to $141.4 billion, led by commercial lending. Average commercial real estate loans also increased, while end-of-period balances grew through multifamily and industrial lending.

M&T expects continued loan and deposit growth in the second half of 2026. It is focusing on deposits across consumer, business banking, commercial, wealth and trust businesses to fund loan demand. It also has access to alternatives including securitizations, debt and Federal Home Loan Bank advances.

Mortgage servicing is another source of fee growth. M&T added 214,000 sub-servicing loans that it expects to generate new revenue in the third and fourth quarters of 2026. The company expects full-year 2026 fee income of $2.8 billion-$2.85 billion, reflecting fee income in the first half, a Bayview distribution and higher sub-servicing fees beginning in the third quarter.

Structural risks

  • Credit quality: Deteriorating credit quality could hurt results. M&T has sought to reduce its relative concentration in commercial real estate, and says about 24% of its office commercial real estate portfolio remains criticized. It expects criticized office loans to continue improving over the next one to two years.

  • Funding and liquidity: M&T must maintain sufficient funding to meet obligations, including deposit withdrawals and loan demand. If it cannot maintain or grow deposits sufficiently, funding costs may rise. Access to other sources could be impaired by deterioration in the company’s condition or disruption in financial markets.

  • Interest rates and the economy: Weak economic conditions can reduce demand for loans and other services. Changes in interest rates, spreads and the composition of assets and liabilities can affect net interest income and margin.

  • Regulation and capital: M&T is subject to extensive supervision and capital and liquidity requirements. Changes in rules could affect costs or permissible activities. Failure to meet capital-buffer requirements can constrain distributions and discretionary executive compensation.

  • Competition and operations: Competition can pressure revenue and profitability. Operational problems can harm the business and reputation and create legal and financial exposure. Acquisitions also carry integration risks, including the possibility that planned operating efficiencies are not achieved.

Bottom line

Our reading

M&T is a regional banking and financial services business whose earnings depend on lending, deposit funding and fees from services including mortgages and trusts. Its deposit base and regional relationships support that model, while credit quality, funding costs and interest-rate changes remain important exposures. Growth in servicing and other fees adds another revenue source, but does not remove those banking risks.
