Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (LGND) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

Ligand’s third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings both exceeded the consensus. Revenue as counted for the consensus was $78.8 million, against an estimate of $77.1 million; adjusted earnings per share were $2.67, against $2.31 expected.

The company reported total revenue and income of $78.7 million, down from $115.5 million a year earlier. Its filing attributed much of the decline to contract income falling after the prior-year divestiture of Pelthos. Royalties rose to $70.3 million from $46.6 million, primarily from acquired XOMA assets, Filspari and Ohtuvayre. Captisol sales fell to $7.9 million from $10.7 million, which the filing attributed primarily to customer order timing.

Ligand reported diluted earnings per share of −$1.43, compared with $5.68 a year earlier. Its operating margin was −20.0%, compared with 47.6%, as the filing showed higher operating expenses, including XOMA transaction and integration costs. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments were $447.4 million at September 30, 2026; the filing attributed the decrease since year-end primarily to the acquisition and other investment activity.

What management said on the call

CEO Todd Davis said Filspari, Ohtuvayre and commercial assets acquired with XOMA led the quarter’s royalty growth. CFO Octavio Espinoza said legacy royalties grew to $58.1 million, while XOMA assets contributed $12.3 million in the roughly 11 weeks following the acquisition’s close. He estimated quarterly Filspari royalties at $16.8 million and said the figure would be adjusted if the partner’s eventual report differed.

Espinoza said Ligand had begun reporting earlier because income from financial royalty assets is driven by long-term forecasts of royalty cash flows. For partners yet to report sales, he said Ligand uses estimates informed by the consensus and adjusts differences in the following quarter. Davis said the XOMA acquisition added three commercial assets and more than 100 pipeline programs; he also identified AvenCell and Ryjunea as new investments.

On investment competition, Davis said commercial-stage royalty deals typically see returns of between 9% and 12%, with multiple bids often competing for an asset. He said Ligand assesses risk and seeks returns above its assessment, including through more complex transactions. Davis also said the company had expanded its investment team and reviewed more than 180 opportunities during the year.

In response to a question about XOMA’s earnings contribution, Espinoza said the company’s expectation for 2027 was unchanged and that cost synergies were coming in better than expected. He said Ligand would discuss the contribution further at its December 8 Investor Day.

For the quarter ahead, Espinoza said revenue would be weighted toward the fourth quarter because it would include a full quarter of XOMA royalties and some royalty rates rise at higher annual sales tiers. He said customer orders and clinical or regulatory milestones remain uncertain, explaining Ligand’s approach to revenue guidance.

Guidance

Ligand raised its full-year 2026 adjusted diluted earnings forecast to $9.50 to $9.75 per share from $9 to $9.50 per share. CFO Octavio Espinoza said visibility into operating expenses, share count and tax rates helped prompt the change.
