GATX Corporation (GATX) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

GATX reported third-quarter revenue of $598.0 million, up 36.1% from $439.3 million a year earlier. Its filing showed diluted earnings per share of $2.92, compared with $2.25 a year earlier; the prior-year figure included a $0.15 per-share benefit from tax adjustments and other items.

The filing attributed the increase in earnings, excluding those prior-year items, largely to higher revenue in Rail North America and Rail International and higher North American asset-sale gains. Higher maintenance, depreciation and interest expenses, along with lower earnings from the Rolls-Royce engine leasing affiliates, partly offset those gains. GATX said the Wells Fargo rail assets acquisition increased Rail North America’s quarterly lease revenue by $128.0 million.

GATX reported a gross margin of 75.0%, compared with 72.8% a year earlier, and an operating margin of 32.2%, compared with 29.0%. Its filing said Engine Leasing segment profit fell to $51.4 million from $60.4 million; the prior-year figure included $10.9 million of insurance recoveries. For the first nine months of 2026, the filing showed operating cash provided increased $215.7 million from the prior-year period.

What management said on the call

On the earnings call, GATX said North American leasing benefited from the supply-demand environment and interest in its existing fleet. Utilization reached 98.4% at quarter-end, while the lease price index showed a +12.4% renewal rate change and an average renewal term of 52 months.

Asked about the declining index, Rail North America President Paul Titterton said it is calculated on a trailing 12-month basis and increasingly incorporates the former Wells Fargo fleet. Fleet mix and sand cars also affected the measure, he said, while pricing across most of the fleet was “flat to slightly up” sequentially. Titterton said placing idle cars from the former Wells Fargo portfolio had helped utilization, although small-cube covered hoppers serving the sand market remained a headwind.

CFO Tom Ellman explained that GATX earns separate fees for managing Brookfield’s wholly owned long-term lease portfolio and its operating lease joint venture. Fees from the former rose to almost $15 million in the quarter from about $2.8 million in each of the first two quarters, partly because GATX earns additional fees on certain asset sales. Ellman said Brookfield ultimately decides what to sell and when.

CEO Bob Lyons said other lessors were the primary buyers in the secondary railcar market. Ellman said the secondary market and higher-than-expected fees from the Brookfield-owned portfolio drove the revised earnings outlook. He said GATX had not quantified how far earnings might exceed its former range because that would depend on the timing of future opportunities.

On investment, GATX said it had placed about 10,300 railcars under its 2022 Trinity supply agreement and that the earliest available scheduled delivery was in the second quarter of 2027. Ellman said GATX expected about $1 billion of investment for the year outside the Wells Fargo acquisition.

Guidance

GATX now expects 2026 earnings per diluted share to modestly exceed the upper end of its previous $9.90-$10.30 range, excluding tax adjustments and other items. CFO Tom Ellman also said the company expects full-year asset dispositions to slightly exceed the $200 million anticipated at the beginning of the year.
