Latest quarter
Federal Signal reported third-quarter revenue of $655.5 million, below the consensus estimate of $662.0 million. Adjusted earnings of $1.34 per share exceeded the consensus estimate of $1.32.
Revenue rose from $555.0 million a year earlier. In its filing, Federal Signal attributed the increase primarily to acquisitions and pricing actions. Environmental Solutions sales grew 21%, led by specialty equipment, aftermarket offerings, and dump truck bodies and trailers; Safety and Security Systems sales grew 2%, with higher industrial signaling sales partly offset by lower warning-system sales.
Diluted earnings rose to $1.29 per share from $1.11 a year earlier. Gross margin declined to 28.9% from 29.1%, while operating margin increased to 17.0% from 16.9%. The filing attributed higher operating income primarily to increased gross profit, partly offset by higher selling, engineering, general and administrative expenses and amortization.
Federal Signal generated $80.0 million in free cash flow, compared with $54.1 million a year earlier. Its filing reported quarterly orders of $620 million, up 33%, and backlog of $967 million at September 30, compared with $992 million a year earlier.

What management said on the call
CEO Jennifer Sherman said both publicly funded and industrial orders increased in the quarter. Within Environmental Solutions, she identified demand for safe-digging trucks, sewer cleaners, metal extraction equipment and road-marking trucks, offset in part by lower dump truck orders year over year. She said the group’s organic order growth was in the high teens.
Sherman said aftermarket revenue rose 21% year over year, driven by parts demand, used equipment sales and rental income. She described investments in making more parts internally and expanding service locations, including a new branch in Quebec City. Aftermarket represented approximately 26% of Environmental Solutions revenue in the quarter, she said.
Asked about the refuse market, Sherman said the industry had tracked the company’s expectation of a double-digit decline this year and that it expected the market to normalize in 2027. She added that “we saw a nice sequential pickup in orders in Q3 from Q2.”
On costs, CFO Ian Hudson said steel was the company’s major raw-material exposure and that “we tend to lock our pricing on steel on a six month basis.” He said the company had factored some steel inflation into its fourth-quarter guidance and was considering continuing inflation when setting product prices. Hudson said pricing exceeded cost increases in the quarter and was slightly additive to margin year over year.
Sherman said the acquisition of Global Vacuum Systems filled a gap in Federal Signal’s vacuum-truck portfolio and could offer cross-selling opportunities through existing sales channels. She also said Safety and Security Systems orders fell year over year because of lower international public-safety equipment orders, but the company expected organic order growth in that group in the fourth quarter.
Guidance
Federal Signal raised its FY2026 adjusted earnings outlook to $5.20 to $5.32 per share from $5.12 to $5.30. Sherman said the company narrowed its full-year net sales outlook to $2.61 billion to $2.64 billion from $2.58 billion to $2.67 billion, primarily because it anticipated delays in third-party refuse-truck deliveries.
