DTE Energy Company (DTE) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

DTE Energy reported third-quarter revenue of $3.7 billion, compared with $3.5 billion a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share rose to $2.26 from $2.01. CFO Dave Ruud said operating earnings were $481 million, or $2.30 per share.

DTE’s filing attributed the increase in quarterly net income primarily to higher earnings at DTE Vantage and Corporate and Other, partly offset by lower Electric segment earnings. Ruud said Electric earnings fell as tax timing, a higher rate base and storm costs outweighed benefits from rate implementation and warmer weather. The filing said higher storm restoration costs were a principal reason for increased distribution operations expense.

DTE reported an operating margin of 16.2%, compared with 17.6% a year earlier. Free cash flow was $768.0 million, compared with −$590.0 million in the prior-year quarter.

What management said on the call

CEO Joi Harris said data center demand is driving utility investment. She said DTE has agreements covering 2.4 gigawatts of load with Oracle and Google, and a pipeline of approximately 5-6 GW of additional opportunities, including 2 GW in advanced discussions. Harris said the company aims to secure another agreement by the end of 2026.

Harris said the contracts are designed to prevent existing customers from paying the costs of serving the data centers. She said the Oracle project could support a pause in electric rate-case filings through at least 2028, subject to the outcome of the current case, while Google could extend that period. In the Q&A, she said a settlement in the current case was unlikely and DTE expected an order in February.

DTE’s five-year utility investment plan totals approximately $44 billion, Harris said. It includes approximately $23 billion for cleaner generation and $12 billion for electric distribution. She said the distribution work includes system hardening and automation to address outages.

Harris also announced a roughly $3 billion sale of essentially all DTE Vantage assets except EES Coke. She said proceeds would go into the utility businesses, with closing targeted for the first half of 2027. In the Q&A, Ruud said the sale would reduce planned equity needs by about a billion dollars and parent-company debt by about $2 billion. He said settlement of $500 million of equity sold under forward contracts would move to 2027.

On the quarter, Ruud said the Electric segment’s tax-timing variance would reverse in Q4. He also said higher renewable natural gas and investment tax credits supported Vantage earnings, allowing DTE to absorb higher utility storm costs while remaining on track for its annual EPS guidance.

Guidance

Harris said DTE’s updated plan calls for annual operating EPS growth of greater than 9% through 2031, measured from the midpoint of a 2027 pro forma baseline of $7.59 to $7.73. The baseline assumes the Vantage sale closed at year-end 2026, although DTE expects the transaction to close in the first half of 2027.

Harris said operating EPS growth is expected to be well above 9% in 2028 and 2029, followed by at least 9% in 2030 and 2031. DTE’s prior long-term target was 6% to 8% through 2030.
