Avantor, Inc. (AVTR) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

Avantor reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $1.7 billion, above the $1.6 billion consensus, and adjusted earnings of $0.22 per share, above the $0.21 consensus. Revenue increased from $1.6 billion a year earlier; the company’s filing attributed the increase primarily to higher sales volume and commercial execution.

The filing said organic sales grew 5.2%, with VWR Distribution & Services benefiting from higher specialty procurement volumes and sales of consumables and lab chemicals. Bioscience & Medtech Products also grew organically, as higher volumes in NuSil and Process Chemicals offset lower Fluid Handling volumes.

Avantor’s gross margin fell to 31.5% from 32.4%, which the filing attributed to product mix and inflation. Diluted earnings per share were $0.30, compared with −$1.04 a year earlier; the filing said operating income increased partly because the prior-year period included a non-cash impairment charge. It also cited a current-year tax benefit from an internal reorganization and lower interest expense after debt repayments.

Avantor reported free cash flow of $156.2 million, compared with $171.7 million a year earlier.

What management said on the call

CEO Emmanuel Ligner said Avantor’s return to organic revenue growth reflected both improved execution and stronger end markets. He said demand from large pharmaceutical and biotech customers continued to improve, while activity also picked up among higher-education and early-stage biotech customers in North America. Europe’s recovery lagged the Americas and Asia, he said, citing energy costs and government funding pressure.

Ligner said the company’s Revival program was improving customer relationships, commercial execution and digital capabilities at VWR. He estimated that approximately half of VWR’s Q3 growth came from commercial initiatives and said the business had expanded relationships with large customers while making progress with smaller accounts and e-commerce. Asked about the durability of that performance, he said he believed the results were sustainable and pointed to the company’s mid-single-digit Q4 growth outlook for VWR.

At Bioscience & Medtech Products, Ligner said manufacturing throughput had increased sequentially during 2026. Chief accounting officer Steven Eck said unusual serum customer ordering and shipment patterns reduced the segment’s Q3 organic growth by roughly 150 basis points. Eck also said NuSil grew at a low-teens rate, while Fluid Handling and research and specialty chemicals declined at a low-single-digit rate.

Asked about margin pressure, Eck said faster growth at VWR, which has a lower gross-margin profile than Bioscience & Medtech Products, was the largest mix factor. He added that lower-margin product categories and customer segments within VWR also affected margins, alongside inflation. On pricing, Eck said better governance, tools and commercial execution had helped Avantor recover supplier cost increases more effectively than in the prior year.

Ligner said Avantor planned further investment in artificial intelligence, supply chain and e-commerce. Asked about Europe, he said the company had assumed a static market in its guidance. He also said the company was still planning for 2027 and would provide more detail on its outlook during its Q4 earnings call.

Guidance

Avantor raised its FY2026 organic revenue growth outlook to 0.75%–1.25% from −0.50%–0.50%, and its adjusted EPS outlook to $0.81–$0.83 from $0.80–$0.83.

For FY2026 free cash flow, the company’s release listed $525.0 million–$550.0 million excluding cash restructuring costs. On the call, Steven Eck gave a $520 million to $550 million range; the prior range was $500.0 million–$550.0 million.
