Albemarle Corporation (ALB) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

Albemarle reported third-quarter net sales of $1.55 billion, above the $1.49 billion consensus, and adjusted earnings of $2.58 per share, above the $2.56 consensus. Revenue rose 18.8% from a year earlier.

The company’s filing attributed the sales increase primarily to higher pricing. Energy Storage sales rose 58%, as higher lithium prices outweighed lower volumes; Specialties sales increased 13%, helped by pricing and volume gains. The filing said the comparison also reflected the absence of Refining Solutions sales following its divestiture.

Gross margin rose to 19.4% from 8.99% a year earlier. The filing cited favorable pricing in both businesses, partly offset by higher input costs and lower Energy Storage volumes. Diluted earnings per share were $2.15, compared with −$1.72 a year earlier.

Albemarle reported $646 million in adjusted EBITDA for the quarter. The company generated $325.4 million in quarterly free cash flow and $1.5 billion in operating cash flow during the first nine months of 2026.

What management said on the call

CEO Kent Masters said global lithium consumption increased 48% year to date, led by demand for energy storage systems and a recovery in electric-vehicle demand. He said stationary storage production nearly doubled year over year through September, supported by electricity demand, grid reliability and project economics.

Asked about lithium demand and inventories, Masters said Albemarle sees about six months into the supply chain and expects growth in 2027, although he was less comfortable specifying a year-to-year figure than discussing the longer-term forecast. Chief Commercial Officer Eric Norris said grid-storage demand was geographically dispersed and cited industrialization, consumer demand and the pairing of renewables with storage among its drivers.

CFO Neal Sheorey said some third-quarter contract pricing reflected the preceding quarter because “Our contract volume has a three-month lag to it.” He also said higher-priced spodumene inventory and Chilean commission payments increased costs. For the fourth quarter, Sheorey expects Energy Storage sales, adjusted EBITDA and margins to decline sequentially if lower market prices persist, with volumes steady; higher-priced spodumene would also flow into production costs.

Asked to separate the contributions of pricing, volumes and cost savings in Specialties, Masters said all three played a role. Sheorey said he could not apportion them exactly, but described efforts to offset logistics costs and pass through some increases. Norris said Albemarle’s supply locations in different regions let it respond to customers seeking supply diversification.

On investment, Masters said Greenbushes CGP3 achieved 30 days of nameplate performance in September and that Albemarle expects the expansion’s full benefit in 2027. Sheorey said lower planned capital spending reflects efficiency improvements and the resequencing of early-stage projects.

Guidance

Albemarle raised its 2026 Specialties adjusted EBITDA outlook to $350 to $375 million from $275 to $325 million. Sheorey attributed the increase to year-to-date performance, expected steady fourth-quarter demand and continued cost and productivity actions.

Sheorey also said Albemarle reduced expected 2026 capital spending to $300 to $350 million from approximately $500 million, reflecting capital-efficiency improvements and resequenced early-stage project spending.
