What management said on the call

CEO Bill Fuhrman said AEP expects demand on its system to more than triple by 2031, with data centers, manufacturing and energy infrastructure driving electricity needs. CFO Trevor Mihalik said AEP has 84 gigawatts of incremental contracted load through 2031, up from 69 gigawatts discussed on the previous call; 35 gigawatts is backed by firm take-or-pay agreements.

Fuhrman said those agreements could generate up to $21 billion in fixed-cost benefits for existing residential customers over their lives, compared with the prior $16 billion estimate. He said new large customers contribute revenue that helps offset fixed costs and that Indiana load growth enabled AEP to file a second rate decrease during the quarter.

Mihalik said the $100 billion five-year capital plan includes $37 billion for transmission, $36 billion for generation and $22 billion for distribution. He expects approximately $55 billion in operating cash flow over the five-year forecast period and said AEP increased equity funding by $5.2 billion while adding $22 billion to the capital plan.

Asked about generation, Fuhrman said AEP had secured turbine slots, while Mihalik said framework agreements with turbine suppliers and craft labor companies support construction. Mihalik said some gas plants had already been filed for or approved, with additional projects supported by customer demand.

On Texas transmission planning, Fuhrman said ERCOT had delayed its Batch Zero process from its original April completion plan, though he did not expect a material further delay. He said AEP had collected over $2 billion in cash or collateral for Texas load. Mihalik said the Texas plan focused on reliability and resiliency, with only a portion of the required transmission build-out included.

Fuhrman said the Wyoming fuel cell project is under construction under a 20-year agreement with Google. He said the Piketon transmission project has a 20-year offtake agreement with SB Energy that will fund its cost.

Guidance

Fuhrman said AEP now expects 2026 operating earnings at or above the high end of its $6.25 to $6.55 per-share guidance range. AEP’s estimated 2026 GAAP earnings are $6.11 to $6.41 per share, compared with its earlier estimate of $6.16 to $6.46.

Mihalik raised AEP’s expected annual operating EPS growth rate to 9% to 11% for 2027 through 2031, from the prior 7% to 9% range. AEP’s new capital plan calls for $100 billion of investment over the five years through 2031, replacing its $78 billion plan for 2026 through 2030.
