Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (TDY) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q3 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

Teledyne reported third-quarter revenue above the consensus by 1.50%, although both reported revenue and the estimate rounded to $1.7 billion. Its adjusted earnings of $6.72 per share also exceeded the $6.15 consensus.

Revenue rose from $1.5 billion a year earlier, while diluted earnings per share increased to $5.82 from $4.65. Teledyne attributed higher net income primarily to increased sales and operating margin. Operating margin rose to 20.6% from 18.4%.

The company said Digital Imaging sales benefited from higher demand for infrared products, surveillance systems, industrial and scientific imaging systems, and X-ray products. CEO George Bobb said environmental instrumentation sales increased, while electronic test and measurement sales declined partly because of order timing.

CFO Steve Blackwood said free cash flow was $319.5 million, compared with $313.9 million a year earlier. He attributed the increase to operating results, partly offset by higher inventory purchases.

What management said on the call

CEO George Bobb said Digital Imaging sales grew 15% in the third quarter, including 14.3% organic growth, across defense and commercial businesses. He pointed to increased sales of infrared detectors for space-based imaging and of infrared subsystems and cameras used by unmanned aircraft and maritime vehicles. Commercial demand also rose across applications including industrial and scientific vision, healthcare X-rays and maritime navigation.

Bobb said marine instrumentation sales benefited from submarine-related interconnects and offshore energy markets, while environmental instruments gained from gas monitoring. Test and measurement sales fell partly because of order timing, he said, although orders increased 18% year over year. In Aerospace and Defense Electronics, he said defense growth was partly offset by lower commercial aerospace sales, while bookings increased in both markets.

Asked about backlog, Executive Chairman Robert Mehrabian said it stood at $5.3 billion and that about 72% would be available as revenue over the next 12 months. He described orders as broad-based across products. On government budget uncertainty, Mehrabian said longer-term programs supported the company’s 2027 outlook, but that other developments could change the outlook in later years.

Bobb said Digital Imaging’s non-GAAP operating margin rose to 25.4%, while Instrumentation’s margin declined because of product mix. On the call, Mehrabian said shortages were causing above-normal inflation in specific inputs. In its filing, Teledyne said it was using pricing actions and other measures to mitigate tariffs and inflation.

Discussing the pending Varex acquisition, Mehrabian said Teledyne planned to apply its approach of focusing on larger revenue opportunities and improving margins, which could initially reduce revenue. He said the company had not completed a detailed analysis while the transaction process continued.

Guidance

Teledyne raised its full-year non-GAAP earnings guidance to $25.40 to $25.50 per diluted share. Its current outlook calls for $6.6 billion in full-year revenue, above its previous forecast.

Mehrabian said the company expected operating margin improvement of closer to 90 basis points for the year, compared with a lower expectation on the prior call.
