What it does
Repligen develops and sells technologies used to manufacture biological drugs. Its customers include biopharmaceutical companies, contract developers and manufacturers, and other life sciences companies. These customers use its products to grow cells, move and filter fluids, purify drug ingredients, and measure what is happening during production.
Biological drugs are made using living systems, so manufacturers must control their production processes and avoid contamination. Repligen supplies products used at different stages, from growing cells in a bioreactor to purifying the resulting material. Its applications include monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, RNA-based therapeutics and vaccines, and cell and gene therapies.
The company operates one bioprocessing business across four franchises: filtration, chromatography, process analytics and proteins. Filtration products include systems and filters that retain cells or separate materials. Chromatography products include pre-packed columns used to purify biologics. Analytics instruments measure process conditions and protein concentrations, while the proteins franchise supplies ingredients used in purification and cell growth.
Repligen also combines products into systems that can connect several manufacturing steps. Its sales teams and technical specialists help customers with demonstrations, implementation and support. Founded in 1981, the company is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts. It had approximately 2,000 employees at the end of 2025.
How it makes money
Repligen earns revenue by selling bioprocessing products, equipment and the consumables used with that equipment. The majority of its revenue comes from consumable or single-use products. It also sells hardware and equipment, provides services and receives royalties associated with its OPUS chromatography columns.
In 2025, product revenue increased 16.4% from 2024; in the third quarter of 2026, total revenue was $209 million.
Filtration products generated $402.8 million in FY2025, or 54.6% of revenue. The franchise includes XCell ATF systems, which retain cells in a bioreactor while nutrients enter and material is harvested. It also includes filters, fluid-management components and flow paths. Some flow paths are consumables for Repligen systems.
In chromatography, OPUS columns are delivered sealed and pre-packed with a customer’s choice of purification resin. The company also sells chromatography systems and test kits. Its proteins business supplies affinity ligands used in purification, as well as growth factors added to cell culture. Some ligands are supplied to other life sciences companies, which incorporate them into resins sold to drug developers and manufacturers.
Process analytics products include instruments for measuring protein concentration and monitoring production conditions. Repligen’s service teams also support equipment in use: services represented 7% of revenue in the third quarter of 2026.
The company recognizes product revenue when control of the promised product or service transfers to the customer. Contract consideration can include variable amounts such as sales rebates. Royalty revenue varies with the partner’s sales, and large production orders can cause quarterly product sales to fluctuate.

Customers and how it sells
Repligen sells to biopharmaceutical companies and contract development and manufacturing organizations, as well as other life sciences companies, diagnostics companies and laboratory researchers. Its products are used by customers developing and manufacturing a range of biologics, including antibodies and cell and gene therapies.
The company sells directly through a commercial organization supported by product specialists, field applications specialists and field service providers. These teams work with customers on demonstrations, implementation and support. Direct sales represented 90.8% of product revenue in 2025. Repligen also supplies ligands to life sciences companies that sell chromatography resins to end users. Purolite is a named ligand customer.
No customer represented 10% or more of total revenue in 2025. No country other than the United States accounted for more than 10% of total revenue that year. Repligen reports customer revenue across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and the rest of the world.
Its headquarters are in Massachusetts, and it has administrative and manufacturing operations around the world. Manufacturing sites outside the United States include locations in Europe and Taiwan. The company is investing in its commercial presence in Asia Pacific and opened a training and innovation center in South Korea in 2026.
Suppliers and costs
Repligen manufactures products across its filtration, chromatography, process analytics and proteins franchises. Its sites produce items such as filters, fluid-management products, protein ligands and analytical instruments. Manufacturing of bioprocessing finished goods is done to order and the products are tested against quality specifications before shipment.
Some products draw on components or technology from partners. Under its Purolite agreement, Repligen supplies affinity ligands and receives access to Purolite’s base-bead technology for developing affinity resins. Repligen also uses fluid-management components in its own flow paths.
Costs include direct materials and labor, as well as research personnel and supplies. Selling and administrative expenses include commercial staff, marketing, professional services and amortization of intangible assets. The company also incurs export duties and supply-chain costs.
In 2025, gross margin was 52.3%, compared with 43.3% in 2024. Repligen attributed the increase to lower cost of goods sold, including reduced costs for scrap, excess and obsolete inventory, and restructuring. Higher export duties, direct material and labor costs partly offset those reductions. The company expects continued cost inflation, primarily in raw materials and other supply-chain costs.

Competitive position
Repligen competes with manufacturers, distributors and other service providers across its product lines. Products compete on innovation, performance, quality, cost effectiveness and suitability for a particular application. New technologies could also compete with its existing products. No competitors are named in the supplied business and competition disclosures.
The company’s portfolio covers several steps in a customer’s manufacturing process. It is shifting its commercial approach from individual products toward integrated solutions that connect production, purification, fluid management and analytics. It also offers customers technical support for implementation and use.
Our reading: Combining products across manufacturing steps and supporting their implementation can help Repligen differentiate its offering, although the available evidence does not establish how difficult customers would find switching suppliers.
Repligen owns or has exclusive rights to more than 250 active patent grants and 150 pending patent applications across several jurisdictions. Its patents cover technologies including filtration systems, membranes, flow paths, chromatography features and affinity ligands. Some rights resulting from collaboration or sponsorship may be limited by agreements.
Our reading: Intellectual property provides protection for particular technologies, but its strength varies by product and contractual rights rather than covering the entire business uniformly.
Repligen says its downstream protein-concentration offerings were recognized in the USP chapter 507 standard and expects this to reduce barriers to adoption. Our reading: That recognition may support customer acceptance of the analytics offering, but it does not by itself establish exclusive access to the market.
Growth opportunities
Repligen plans to grow through internal product development, cross-selling, geographic expansion and selected acquisitions. It is developing complementary products intended to let customers connect more of their manufacturing process, including fluid management and analytics. Its key-account team seeks to increase both the number of product lines purchased and the volume sold to large pharmaceutical and contract manufacturing customers.
The company estimates its addressable market at approximately $13 billion at year end 2025. It sees opportunities in commercial manufacturing volumes as customers’ drug candidates progress through clinical trials, as well as in applications for cell and gene therapies and other newer types of biologics. Repligen also plans to expand its commercial presence in Asia Pacific.
Acquisitions add products and capabilities. In 2025, Repligen acquired the 908 Devices bioprocessing analytics portfolio. It closed the BioLife acquisition in October 2026, expanding its capabilities in the cell therapy market. The company is integrating BioLife and working on its scrap rates and commercial opportunities.
In the third quarter of 2026, Repligen reported 12.5% organic revenue growth. Capital equipment orders increased mid-teens year-over-year, although equipment revenue declined. Customers requested delivery of most systems in the order plan in 2027. Repligen narrowed its full-year 2026 organic growth outlook to 12% to 13% and expected a $24 million revenue contribution from BioLife after the acquisition closed.

Structural risks
-
Technology and product development: Competitors may develop approaches that make Repligen’s products or technology obsolete. If the company cannot expand its portfolio, its ability to generate revenue could be adversely affected.
-
Manufacturing and supply: Failure to manufacture sufficient quantities on time could harm operating results, reduce revenue and affect gross margin. Repligen expects continued inflation in raw materials and other supply-chain costs.
-
Customer orders: Large-scale production orders can cause quarterly sales fluctuations. In 2026, Repligen cited a two-customer headwind in ATF and said customer decisions on equipment orders remained delayed.
-
Acquisitions: Integrating acquired operations, technologies and personnel can be difficult. Acquired businesses may underperform expectations, anticipated synergies may not materialize, and acquisitions can consume cash or require additional financing.
-
Debt and financing: Servicing debt requires cash, and Repligen may not have sufficient cash flow or be able to raise funds when needed. Additional equity or convertible debt financing could dilute shareholders.
-
Financial controls: Repligen previously identified material weaknesses in internal control over financial reporting and restated certain earlier financial information. Inability to provide reliable financial reports or prevent fraud could harm the business.
Bottom line
Our reading
Our reading: Repligen is a supplier of equipment and predominantly consumable products embedded across several stages of biologic drug production, with filtration a substantial part of its revenue. (item1; item7)
Our reading: Its expansion depends on product adoption, customer manufacturing activity and acquisitions, while order timing, manufacturing costs and integration can affect results.
