What management said on the call
John Gibson said revenue growth reflected PEO and insurance solutions, while Paychex continued to focus on data and AI, go-to-market evolution, and advisory differentiation. He said the company piloted intelligent pay cycle with more than 50,000 businesses and that WISE helped prevent approximately 90% of the payroll errors addressed in that pilot. Gibson also said Paychex had deployed more than 2,000 AI agents and features across the business, and that automated payroll processing increased by nearly 20% from January through August.
Gibson said Paychex’s One Paychex approach was intended to equip sales and customer-success teams to match customers with the appropriate technology and advisory offerings from the start of the relationship. He said CPA, bank and broker relationships generated a significant share of leads and higher win rates, and that Paychex signed a national broker partnership with IMA Financial Group. The CEO said PEO recorded high-single-digit worksite-employee growth, record retention and strong ASO-client upgrades to PEO relationships. He also said client retention improved, price realization continued, and product penetration contributed to the quarter.
Schrader said Management Solutions revenue grew 4% through product penetration and price realization, while PEO and insurance revenue grew 12% through PEO worksite-employee growth and insurance volumes. He said total expenses rose 1%, with higher PEO direct insurance costs and strategic investments largely offset by lower acquisition-related costs and AI efficiencies. Schrader said adjusted operating margin increased approximately 130 basis points to 42%, driven by productivity and cost discipline while the company continued its strategic investments.
Analysts asked why Management Solutions trailed management’s expectations and why PEO outperformed. Schrader said ASO-to-PEO upgrades and HCM-team referrals into PEO shifted revenue between the categories, while Gibson said ASO-to-PEO conversions were double Paychex’s expectations. Schrader said the company expects PEO and insurance solutions to trend toward the high end of its range if PEO upsells and HCM referrals continue, while Management Solutions could trend toward the low end.
Guidance
Paychex raised its FY2027 forecast for PEO and Insurance Solutions revenue growth to 7.00% to 8.00%, from 6% to 7%, which CFO Bob Schrader attributed to continued PEO strength. Schrader said Paychex now expects interest on funds held for clients of $200 million to $210 million, including the most recent 25-basis-point increase in the federal funds rate.
For Q2 FY2027, Schrader said Paychex expects revenue growth of approximately 4.00% and an adjusted operating margin of approximately 40.0%.
