Latest quarter
James Hardie reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of $1.5 billion, up 63.9% from $899.9 million a year earlier. Revenue beat the consensus by 0.77%, although both reported revenue and the estimate rounded to $1.5 billion. Adjusted EPS of $0.36 also beat the $0.32 consensus. Revenue came in above the company’s own quarterly guidance.
The filing attributed the sales increase primarily to the AZEK acquisition, which contributed $397.1 million, as well as higher sales in Siding & Trim, Australia & New Zealand and Europe. North American fiber cement sales rose 20%, with higher volume as customer inventories normalized and a higher average selling price. Deck, Rail & Accessories sales of $305.1 million were 5% below AZEK’s comparable pre-acquisition sales, which the filing attributed to lower volumes.
Gross margin slipped to 37.2% from 37.4%; the filing cited amortization of acquired intangible assets, partly offset by higher margins in Siding & Trim and Australia & New Zealand. Operating margin fell to 14.8% from 15.4%. Free cash flow rose to $254.2 million from $103.7 million, while diluted EPS increased to $0.18 from $0.15.

What management said on the call
The available earnings call covered Q4 FY2026, before the reported Q1 results. On that call, CEO Aaron Erter said the company’s priority was returning its fiber cement business to growth. He pointed to repair and remodeling opportunities in the Northeast and Midwest, where James Hardie was working to make installation easier and broaden dealer access.
Asked how the plan was working, Erter said a Midwest pilot had produced low-double-digit growth over the preceding year and was being rolled out to other regions. President and General Manager Jonathan Skelly said the company had addressed installation and pricing gaps to improve the offering for homeowners and contractors. Skelly also said the combined sales team retained product specialists, coordinated through a channel manager who gives customers one point of contact.
CFO Ryan Lada said James Hardie was taking a more conservative inventory position with channel partners in deck, rail and accessories for Q1. He expected softer sales and margins in that business as a result, while anticipating positive sell-through in the quarter and full year. Erter said the company had expanded its shelf position in professional and retail channels and was using pricing to offset inflation.
Lada said the company expected $80 million to $100 million of FY2027 cost pressure across raw materials, freight and energy, with pricing actions announced in late April intended to offset it. He also said capital spending would focus on maintenance, safety and targeted growth investments. On competition, Skelly said the company believed it could gain share regardless of competitors’ pricing decisions.
Lada said some customer conversions required inventory buybacks from the channel. He described those costs as not fully modeled into guidance and said the company would quantify them where material.
