Latest quarter
Carpenter Technology reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of $798.2 million, below the consensus estimate of $807.8 million. Adjusted earnings per share of $3.25 exceeded the consensus estimate of $2.97. Revenue rose from $733.7 million a year earlier, while diluted EPS increased from $2.43 to $3.25.
The filing attributes sales growth excluding raw-material surcharges primarily to higher prices and demand for aerospace, defense, industrial and consumer materials. Aerospace and defense sales rose 14 percent year over year, while medical sales fell 12 percent as customers managed inventories. Specialty Alloys Operations benefited from higher demand; Performance Engineered Products reported lower sales, including a decline in medical.
Carpenter’s gross margin rose to 32.1% from 29.5%, and its operating margin increased to 24.6% from 20.9%. The filing credits productivity improvements, product mix and pricing among the factors behind the operating result.
Free cash flow was −$24.8 million, compared with −$3.4 million a year earlier; the filing attributes the decline to higher capital spending, particularly on the brownfield expansion. Operating income of $196.4 million was within Carpenter’s prior guidance of $195.0 million to $200.0 million.

What management said on the call
CEO Tony Thene said commercial aerospace supply-chain bookings rose 25% year over year in the first quarter. Aerospace distribution and structural bookings increased 49% year over year, while engine bookings rose 22%. He said some customers were ordering below the levels needed to support current aircraft production rates.
Defense bookings fell both sequentially and year over year, Thene said, because customers lacked the funding flow needed to place orders. Asked about the market, he said he expected a rush of orders once budgets became clearer.
On pricing, Thene said Carpenter completed two aerospace long-term agreements in the quarter at higher prices. Asked about potential improvements against the fiscal 2027 plan, he said volume, productivity and pricing could exceed the assumptions used when the company gave its guidance. He also said his demand and pricing outlooks were stronger than a quarter earlier.
CFO Tim Lane said planned preventive-maintenance downtime contributed to a sequential sales decline. He attributed Specialty Alloys Operations’ performance partly to product mix and pricing, and said he expected further margin expansion from productivity, mix and pricing, although shipment mix could cause quarterly variation. Asked how productivity had improved, Thene said the work covered multiple plant areas: “when you unlock one bottleneck, by definition, that creates another one.”
Lane said the brownfield capacity expansion remained on budget and on schedule for completion by the start of fiscal 2028, with major equipment installation underway. Asked about cash flow, he said Carpenter had built inventory in the first quarter and expected to draw it down as operating days increased later in the year. He added that capital spending could be higher in the second half as the project neared completion.
For the second quarter, Lane said holiday-related production time would be lower, with productivity and product mix expected to partly offset that reduction.
Guidance
For Q2 FY2027, Carpenter expects operating income of $192.0 million to $197.0 million; its prior guidance for Q1 was $195.0 million to $200.0 million. CFO Tim Lane said the Q2 outlook includes Specialty Alloys Operations operating income of $214.0 million to $218.0 million, compared with the prior Q1 guide of $218.0 million to $222.0 million. He expects approximately $7.0 million from Performance Engineered Products, versus the prior Q1 range of $6.0 million to $7.0 million.
