What management said on the call
CEO Garrick Rochow said CMS had added approximately 745 megawatts of contracted load in its service territory and energized approximately 450 megawatts, primarily from manufacturing and semiconductor customers. He said those figures exclude the large data-center agreement signed earlier in the year, which was progressing through zoning at multiple locations.
Asked about the data-center pipeline, Rochow said other projects were acquiring land in Michigan. CFO Sri Maddipati said the existing five-year plan already included 2% to 3% sales growth, while a data center would add to both load and capital spending. Maddipati said the company would consider conditions including siting before adding the signed project’s capital to its financial plan.
On investment, Rochow said the integrated resource plan filed in September identified roughly $27 billion in opportunities across clean energy, battery storage and gas generation. He said the plan assumed the financial compensation mechanism for power-purchase agreements would reach approximately $125 million beginning in 2031 and approximately $195 million by 2040. Asked about policy discussions around the mechanism, Rochow said, “we don’t see the FCM going away.”
Rochow said more than 35% of NorthStar assets were under signed agreements or closed, with most remaining assets in exclusivity with buyers. He said the restructuring remained on track for completion by year-end and would reduce funding needs by over $500 million within the current five-year plan for use at the utility.
On rates, Rochow said the Michigan commission approved a $139 million gas-rate increase. He said CMS had revised its electric-rate request to $443 million, while regulatory staff recommended $265 million; the company expects a final order by early April 2027.
For the remainder of 2026, Maddipati said favorable weather relative to plan and storm-cost deferral gave CMS flexibility to manage weather and storm risk and reinvest in reliability, gas operations, customer service and digital projects.
