What management said on the call

Gary Smith said Ciena is operating in an environment of increasing demand for bandwidth and network connectivity tied to AI-related network and data-center investment. He said the company’s Q3 book-to-bill ratio was significantly greater than 1% and that it expected backlog to rise faster in Q4. Smith said Ciena had secured increased customer commitments through 2029 and described the backlog as extending into fiscal 2028.

Smith said demand spans Ciena’s traditional wide-area-network market, AI WAN applications and data centers. He cited customer adoption of WaveLogic 6 Extreme, demand for intelligent line systems and orders for HyperRail. He said Ciena remained on track for initial customer standardization of HyperRail by the end of 2026, with material revenue expected during 2027. He also said Ciena expected revenue from its CPX business to begin in 2027 and ramp into 2028.

Marc Graff said adjusted gross margin was 46.4% in Q3 FY2026, including an approximately 70-basis-point benefit from tariff refunds. Graff said the tariff-refund effect was a one-time accounting adjustment that Ciena did not expect to continue. He said the company had invested working capital to support inventory and revenue growth, while generating $116.3 million in free cash flow. Graff also said Ciena increased capacity through capital investments and expected capital expenditures to be at the high end of its $250.0 million–$275.0 million range.

Analysts asked about pricing, supply availability and the ability to turn backlog into revenue. Graff said discussions with customers covered price increases, payment terms, fill rates and reciprocal supply commitments. Smith said fiscal 2027 revenue would be higher if Ciena had more supply, while Graff said the company did not expect industry supply and demand to return to balance before 2028. Graff said Ciena expected lower cash from operations in Q4 as it funded supply agreements.

Smith said Ciena expected its share of the optical systems and plug market to increase in fiscal 2027. Graff said Ciena expected HyperRail economics to be above the current corporate average, but did not quantify a margin figure for the product.
