What management said on the call

Chief Executive Officer Eduardo Menezes said adjusted operating income rose 9% and adjusted operating margin reached 25.6%, with volume and pricing improvements partly offset by higher costs. Chief Financial Officer Melissa Schaffer said new assets in Asia and the Americas, higher production at U.S. refinery assets, pricing and equity-affiliate contributions supported the quarter, while fixed-cost inflation remained a cost pressure.

Menezes said the company’s traditional industrial-gas backlog was approximately $3 billion and that a significant portion was intended to support electronics customers. He said the company had won over $1.5 billion in projects during the preceding six months and was targeting approximately $1.5 billion of annual investment in traditional industrial-gas projects going forward. Menezes told analysts that the opportunity list was weighted toward electronics, while traditional chemicals and steel markets had substantial capacity.

On pricing and demand, Schaffer said pricing improved in the Americas but was more than offset by lower helium pricing, which she attributed largely to a slow quarter in space activity. Menezes said the Americas merchant market was progressing relatively well, Europe’s industrial market was not growing, and China remained difficult despite some improvement. Schaffer said the company was seeing electronics-related returns and asset ramp-ups, stronger HyCO volumes in the Americas, and mixed conditions elsewhere.

Menezes said Air Products exited the Louisiana project, the Casa Grande project and smaller clean-energy distribution projects, producing a $2.9 billion pre-tax charge. He said the company was working to redeploy industrial-gas assets and sell ammonia-production assets associated with Louisiana. Schaffer said the reduced capital-expenditure forecast largely reflected payment timing in the backlog, rather than a material change in the company’s ability to invest in industrial-gas projects.

Analysts asked about the renewable-ammonia project and its financial exposure. Menezes said Air Products did not expect an impact in fiscal 2027 and would provide a clearer picture before each year, while declining to quantify periods beyond then because of joint-venture agreements and confidentiality obligations. Schaffer said the company expected normal Middle East joint-venture equity-income run rates to resume in the fourth quarter after a timing-related preferred-dividend benefit.
