Ameren Corporation (AEE) Earnings & Analysis

Updated · Covers results through Q2 FY2026 · Earnings call · How this is made

Latest quarter

Ameren reported Q2 FY2026 revenue of $2.1 billion, below the consensus estimate of $2.4 billion. Adjusted earnings of $1.13 per share exceeded the consensus estimate of $1.08.

Revenue fell from $2.2 billion a year earlier, while diluted earnings per share rose from $1.01 to $1.13. Ameren’s filing attributed the earnings increase partly to infrastructure investments reflected in rates across its businesses, as well as earnings from equity-method investments. Higher Missouri operations and maintenance expenses partly offset those gains.

The filing said Ameren Missouri’s quarterly electric revenue fell $221 million, primarily as spring capacity prices declined, while Ameren Illinois Electric Distribution revenue rose $56 million. Ameren also reported lower fuel and purchased power expenses, driven by Missouri.

Ameren’s gross margin rose to 73.9% from 62.5%, and its operating margin increased to 21.9% from 18.5%. Free cash flow was −$310.0 million, compared with −$205.0 million a year earlier.

What management said on the call

CEO Marty Lyons said Ameren Missouri had signed 2.8 gigawatts of electric service agreements and had another four gigawatts of potential projects with completed interconnection studies. He said the signed agreements call for sales to begin in the second half of 2027, with annual electricity sales expected to increase by 60% from 2025 levels by the end of 2029.

CFO Lenny Singh said the new large-load agreements carry no discounts and charge more than standard industrial rates. He estimated that projected revenue from those customers would reduce Missouri customers’ base rates by approximately $21 million over the two years following the rate review, compared with what they otherwise would have paid.

Singh said infrastructure investment remained the primary driver of earnings growth, while increased tree trimming and energy center maintenance raised Missouri operations and maintenance expenses. Lyons said Ameren invested more than $2.6 billion in energy infrastructure during the first six months of the year and identified more than $71 billion of investment opportunity through 2035.

On regulation, Singh said the company’s $343 million Missouri electric revenue increase request was intended to recover reliability and resiliency investments. He expected a regulatory order by May of 2027 and new rates by June 2027. In Illinois, he said stakeholders had proposed adjustments to projects in Ameren’s $2.75 billion distribution grid plan, with a decision expected by December.

Asked how demand would affect the growth plan, Lyons said the signed agreements implied additional sales beyond the company’s earlier assumptions. He said Ameren would update its sales, investment and financing plans alongside its earnings-growth outlook on the third-quarter call, adding: “I’m not going to front run, you know, what that update might look like.”

On generation, Lyons said Ameren was examining additional resources for rising demand, including solar, batteries and fuel cells. Asked about financing, Singh said the company would use a mix of debt and equity and could use hybrid securities for part of its future needs.

Guidance

Ameren reaffirmed its 2026 earnings guidance of $5.25 to $5.45 per share. Singh said the company remained focused on delivering earnings at or above the midpoint of that range. Lyons said Ameren planned to update its long-term earnings-growth expectations on its third-quarter call.
